Is your life really under the control of your subconscious mind? Are you powerless against the subconscious thoughts and beliefs that shape your actions? When it comes to who or what is actually in control of our lives, there's good and bad news. Researchers believe that the subconscious mind drives 95% of our behaviors. As a certified Quantum Healing Hypnosis Technique (QHHT) practitioner with a career spent helping my clients unlock the power of human consciousness, I definitely have some thoughts on this.
What Does Research Tell Us About the Subconscious?
According to Yale-based social psychologist John Bargh's research, much of a person’s everyday life is determined by mental processes that are put into motion by features of that person's environment. While we think our life is shaped by conscious intentions and deliberate choices, we're actually "prisoners" of motivations outside of conscious awareness and guidance. While it sounds daunting, it doesn't have to be! Hypnosis is the vehicle that allows us to enter the subconscious space to rewire our beliefs to finally start living based on our true wants and desires instead of following a script designed by our fears and limiting beliefs.
Where Does the "95%" Figure Come From?
What does it mean when we say that the subconscious drives 95% of our behavior? While we feel like we are in control of our lives as we choose what to eat or what to wear each day, 95% of our brain activity actually happens on a subconscious level. That means our brains are working "behind the scenes" to shape our emotions, beliefs about ourselves, and behaviors in ways we can't actually perceive in real time.
We don't have to be mad at our brains. Ultimately, the brain's job is to keep us protected based on the input it has received. For example, think of a young child who learns that she will only be loved and accepted if she does everything that her caretaker wants her to do perfectly. For self-protection, her brain will write a subconscious script that drives her to be a perfectionist in all things. The fact that perfectionist behaviors lead to burnout, anxiety, and heartache over and over again throughout her life can't motivate her to make changes because the subconscious script is part of her cognitive DNA.
It can seem like bad news to hear that your choices, feelings, and actions are technically outside of your control. However, it's actually good news to realize that the patterns of failure, anxiety, or poor relationships that you keep getting trapped in aren't actually your choice - not on a conscious level at least. It's even better news when you realize that there is a way to actually take back that 95% of control over your life. It's called hypnosis.
Taking Back the 95%: How Hypnosis Gives You Greater Control Over Your Life

With 95% of your decisions being made on a subconscious level, you're actually powerless against these drivers and motivations when you try to override them in the conscious world. When you engage in hypnosis, you're able to access the subconscious parts of your mind that aren't accessible in a normal state of awareness. Through hypnosis, an open and suggestible state is accessed that allows you to identify and override beliefs that are sabotaging your life. Hypnosis is so powerful at altering brain function that researchers have been able to identify changes in brain structure and greater activity in the frontal brain area following hypnosis using imaging technology.
If hearing that 95% of your behaviors are being driven by subconscious motivations you can't control is making something "click" for you, it may be time to explore hypnosis. Reach out for a consultation today!
